EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES – Just a selection of the many and varied events during the calendar year
Activities include something for everyone, dining, special interest, sport, fun and socialising. The committee runs three formal black tie dinner dances each year. On the last Tuesday of each month, there is a Club Night where all members can socialise, enjoy a finger buffet and meet with other members. This is when they collect their Newsletter including that month’s programme and forward calendar of events.
Activities run by the members:
Regular theatre and concert programme - Plays, shows, comedies, Shakespeare (including the Globe Theatre), musicals. Concerts - orchestral, choral, classical, pop, rock, folk, jazz, Big Band and opera. Open air theatre concerts and picnics. Old Tyme Music Hall, Goring Unplugged
Walks – summer and winter calendar of organised walks to interesting locations. Walking weekends, Ghost walks and educational walks(flora including snowdrops and bluebells, fauna, bird watching and moth and butterfly studies, sitting in Hides to watch badgers and bat walks)
Holidays and weekends – in France, Spain, Madeira, Croatia and a flotilla sailing holiday in the Ionian Islands. Eden Project, Chocolate (Cadbury’s World) & Steam weekend at the Severn Valley Steam Railway. Christmas weekends in Ludlow, Bournemouth and Eastbourne.
Dining – in members’ homes and dining out at restaurants, pubs and wine bars – even murder mystery evenings and charades!
Music evenings, Cheese & Wine, cocktail parties, Round About 8s and parties in members’ homes. Video and DVD Supper evenings. And if the weather is kind - BBQs in members’ gardens!
Visits to exciting venues and tours of - BMW Mini Production Line, BBC Wood Lane Studios, BBC Monitoring Station and BBC Radio Berkshire, Wimbledon Tennis, Lords Cricket Ground, Wembley Stadium Tour, Visit to factory to see traditional furniture craftsmen make quality wooden furniture, Wetlands Centre, Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, Brewery tour and vineyard tours and tastings! Art studio trails, quiz evenings, games evenings – Scrabble, Trivial pursuits and pub quizzes, Pub nights.
Educational visits to Kew Gardens, Savill Garden, Harris Garden, London Boat Show, Tower of London, London Eye, Tours of Buckingham Palace, Brooklands Motor Museum and Mercedes World, Highclere Castle, Hampton Court Palace, Bletchley Park, Visits to National Trust properties, RHS Gardens, Highgate Cemetery, Ballet at Sadler’s Wells.
Sports (participating and spectator) - Active golf society, horse riding group, skittles, ten pin bowling, rounders matches, boating and sailing. Horse racing and dog racing.
Special Interest Groups - Bridge, mah-jong, discussion group, book group, cinema, cycling, lunches.
Plus a regular weekly pub night - hosted by a committee member where new and prospective members can come and meet members and socialise in a friendly pub that stocks some fine real ale!
